伯牙善鼓琴，钟子期善听。伯牙鼓琴，志在高山，钟子期曰：“善哉！峨峨兮若泰山！”志在流水，钟子期曰：“善哉！洋洋兮若江河！”伯牙所念，钟子期必得之。

这段文字的大意是说，伯牙弹琴的时候，心中想到高山，钟子期就说：“好啊！巍峨如泰山！”伯牙心中想到流水，钟子期又说：“好啊！浩荡如江河！”无论伯牙心中想着什么，钟子期都能理解他的心境。

Bo Ya was good at playing the qin, and Zhong Ziqi was good at listening. When Bo Ya played the qin, his mind would be on the mountains, and Zhong Ziqi said: "Wonderful! Majestic like Mount Tai!" When his mind was on the rivers, Zhong Ziqi said: "Wonderful! Vast like the rivers and seas!" Whatever Bo Ya thought in his heart, Zhong Ziqi could understand it.
