I remember when I was young, I could open my eyes wide to the sun and clearly see the finest details. Whenever I encountered tiny objects, I would carefully examine their textures, thus often experiencing pleasures beyond the material world. In summer, when mosquitoes buzzed like thunder, I imagined them as a group of cranes dancing in the sky; whatever I focused on became either hundreds or thousands of cranes. I would raise my head to watch them, until my neck grew stiff. Sometimes, I kept mosquitoes in a white mosquito net and slowly sprayed smoke at them, making them fly through the smoke while chirping, creating an illusion of white cranes flying amidst clouds—a scene that made me feel delighted.
On uneven walls or among the grassy patches of flower beds, I would squat down so that my line of sight aligned with the height of the surface, then concentrate intently to see the grass as a forest, insects as beasts, and small stones as hills and valleys. I would mentally wander within this imaginary world, feeling completely content.
One day, I saw two insects fighting in the grass. As I watched intently, suddenly a huge creature came crashing through, overturning everything—it turned out to be a toad. Its tongue flicked out and swallowed both insects whole. At the time, I was still a child, so absorbed in watching that I let out a startled gasp. Once I regained my composure, I caught the toad, whipped it several times, and sent it off to another courtyard.
